How do I identify counterfeit Magic cards?

The identification of counterfeit Magic cards is not always easy. For this reason we would like to show you some help and examples how you can distinguish counterfeit from orignal cards.

But how do you get counterfeit cards in the first place and what are the typical places where they are sold?

Be careful when buying Magic cards from Ebay and co.

Especially on Ebay there are often counterfeits in circulation. But also bigger tournaments like a Grand Prix or other events are popular places to bring fakes under the people.

In contrast to a small Friday Night Magic tournament, there are many players at a Grand Prix that you don't know personally. This makes it almost impossible to get in contact with this person in case of a later detection.

Tip 1.)

Keep an eye on it

Take a close look at the card. If it is wrapped in a sleeve, ask if you can carefully remove the card from the sleeve.
Often counterfeits can be recognized with the naked eye because the color print is usually too dark and the colors too strong.

Another distinguishing feature is that counterfeits are often shiny.

Tip 2.)

Bend the card

It sounds strange but you can bend original magick cards completely from top to bottom without damaging them. With counterfeits it is very often the case that they break or tear and the bend is clearly visible.

But of course you should always do this test very carefully, because it can happen from time to time that an original card gets damaged.

Tip 3.)

Examine the card

Use a flashlight or other light to shine through a card. With original cards, a bluish tint should show through at any point on the card. With counterfeits, it is very often the case that the light has a very difficult time shining through the card, if at all.

This test is very effective and really recommended.

Tip 4.)

Put the cards on a scale

For this test we need a very accurate scale. Original magick cards usually weigh between 1.75 - 1.80 grams. Counterfeit magick cards are often heavier or much too light.
